SB3 Industrial Door Mounting Options: How to Choose the Right Installation Method for Your Facility
Selecting the correct industrial roll-up door mounting option is just as important as selecting the right door. The correct industrial door mounting option is critical to performance, durability, and proper sealing. Between-jamb, face-of-wall (surface mount), and stand-off mounting styles each solve different structural and operational challenges in warehouse and industrial facilities.
Even the best high-cycle or vinyl roll-up door will underperform if the track system doesn’t match the structure, clearance, or application requirements of the opening.
At SB3 Doors, we supply three primary mounting configurations:
- Between-Jamb Mount
- Face-of-Wall Mount (Surface Mount)
- Stand-Off Mount (Attached to an Existing Door)
Each option solves a different structural challenge.
Below is a comprehensive guide to help you determine which mounting method fits your facility.

1️⃣ Between-Jamb Mount

(Tracks are installed inside the door opening, which reduces available headroom and side clearance within the opening.)
Best For: Applications requiring tighter sealing performance or when obstructions on the wall surface prevent face-of-wall mounting.
How It Works
The vertical guide tracks are mounted inside the door jambs, allowing the curtain to travel upward within the guides. As the door opens, the material wraps around the roll tube (barrel). The barrel diameter is largest when the door is fully open and decreases as the door closes.
Ideal Applications
- Warehouse openings
- Food processing rooms
- Climate-controlled spaces
- Facilities where wall space is obstructed
Benefits
- Clean, flush installation
- Good sealing when jambs are square
Considerations
- Opening must be square and structurally sound
- Reduces clear opening width and height (tracks, mounting plates and roll tube sit inside opening)
- Doors are manufactured with a ±1/8" tolerance. Accurate field measurements are critical — measure width at the top, center, and bottom of the opening, and height on both the left and right sides. Always complete the site measurement form to ensure proper fit and avoid installation issues.
Choose Between-Jamb When:
✔ The opening is framed and square
✔ You need a tight seal
✔ There are wall obstructions
2️⃣ Face-of-Wall Mount (Wall Mount)

(Tracks mounted on the surface of the wall)
Best For: When maximizing clear opening width is critical.
How It Works
The guide tracks mount directly to the face or surface of the wall, inside or outside of the opening.
Ideal Applications
- Distribution centers
- Warehouse openings
- Food processing rooms
- Climate-controlled spaces
Benefits
- Maintains full clear opening
- Easier retrofit in many existing buildings
- Allows installation even if jamb width is limited
Considerations
- Tracks are more exposed to forklift traffic
- Requires adequate wall surface for fastening
- What you are mounting to
Choose Face-of-Wall When:
✔ When You Need Full Clear Opening Width & Height
✔ The jamb width is insufficient
✔ The wall surface is structurally sound
3️⃣ Stand-Off Mount (In Front of Existing Door)

(Installed in front of an overhead sectional)
Best For: Facilities that want an additional barrier without removing an existing door.
How It Works
The door system mounts out in front of the existing door using stand-off brackets. The roll-up door operates independently of the primary door. Side and top seals are included to help maintain FDA and AIB compliance standards.
Ideal Applications
- If a facility already has a sectional overhead door
- When wall conditions aren’t ideal for surface mount
- Warehouse openings
- Food processing rooms
- Climate-controlled spaces
- Need to maintain a clear opening *
* When attaching to an existing standard-lift track, some clear opening height will be reduced. Hi-Lift and Full Vertical lift track configurations maintain maximum clear opening.
Benefits
- No need to remove existing door
- Adds environmental separation
- Allows install even with jamb or surface mounting challenges
- Maintains flexibility (open one door, both doors, or neither)
Considerations
- Requires sufficient projection clearance
- Must verify structural support for stand-off brackets
- Headroom and operator clearance must be reviewed
Choose Stand-Off When:
✔ You’re adding a screen or vinyl door in front of an existing overhead door
✔ You want seasonal flexibility
✔ You need airflow or climate control without pests
✔ You want to maintain your original door system
Key Factors to Evaluate Before Selecting a Mounting Option
Before quoting or ordering, we evaluate:
1️⃣ Side Room
Do you have sufficient space inside the jamb for guides?
2️⃣ Headroom
Is there enough space above the opening for the barrel and operator?
3️⃣ Wall Structure
Is it steel? CMU block? Wood framing?
This determines anchoring method and mounting viability.
4️⃣ Obstructions
Electrical conduit, sprinkler lines, dock equipment, racking, or structural columns may dictate mounting style.
5️⃣ Traffic Flow
High forklift traffic may favor protected track placement.
6️⃣ Environmental Control Needs
Food facilities often prefer tighter sealing methods.
