Manual Roll-Up Door Installation Instructions
Step-by-step installation for SB3 manual (spring-loaded) roll-up doors. These instructions cover both bug screen and vinyl roll-up doors — the hardware, tracks, spring, and mounting are identical, and only the curtain material differs.
This guide walks through the full manual install: bracket mounting, spring tensioning, curtain hang, and final testing. It works alongside the printable mounting-style PDF that shipped with your door — always follow the exact fastener sizes, clearances, and spring turns in your PDF.

Step 1: Choose Your Mounting Style
Every roll-up door mounts one of three ways. The spring, curtain, and testing steps below are the same for all three — only the bracket/track attachment differs. Pick the one that matches your opening, then download its printable guide.
Face-of-Wall Mount
The tracks fasten flat to the wall face on either side of the opening, so the door is built roughly 8″ wider and taller than the opening to let the hardware clear it. This is the go-to when there's no usable jamb or you're mounting to a flat interior or exterior wall. The header curtain attaches to the outside wall with an aluminum clamp strip about 6″ above the roll.
Under-Lintel / Between-Jamb Mount
The brackets and guide tracks fasten inside the opening — to the door jambs and up under the lintel — so the door tucks into the opening itself. This suits finished masonry or steel-framed openings with solid jambs to anchor into. Note that the 6″ brush seal / automatic-reset must be installed on the track before the tracks are fastened to the wall; it can't be added afterward.
Stand-Off Mount
The door attaches to your existing sectional (overhead) door tracks using stand-off brackets — no separate wall or jamb fastening required. This is the choice when a sectional door is already in place and you want to add a bug screen in front of it. Each side uses a minimum of four stand-off brackets, with a top header angle tying the assembly together.

Know the Parts of Your Roll-Up Door
Every SB3 roll-up shares the same core assembly, whether the curtain is mesh or vinyl.

- Roll Tube Mounting Bracket — supports each end of the roll tube (spring end and idler end).
- Spring-Loaded Roll Tube — the tube the curtain rolls onto; tensioned to counterbalance the curtain.
- 6″ Brush Seal / Automatic Reset System — keeps the curtain seated in the track and resets it after impact.
- Windbar and Pocket — horizontal stiffeners that hold the curtain flat against wind.
- Curtain — insect-screen mesh or reinforced vinyl, depending on your door.
- Pull-Down Handles & Strap — used to draw the curtain down to the floor.
- Locking Pin — secures the curtain in the down position through the bottom grommet.
- Vinyl Weatherstripping & Bottom Foam Cushion — seal the sides and floor when closed.
Before You Begin
- Inspect the shipment — note any crate or packaging damage on the freight paperwork before signing; exterior damage can hide concealed damage. Verify all parts against the packing list.
- Verify dimensions — confirm the door width and height against your order, and check that the opening is square.
- Confirm the mounting surface — jamb, wall, or existing sectional track must be sound and use the correct fasteners for the material.
- Check clearances — you need headroom above the opening for the roll and hood, plus side room for the tracks.
Required Tools
- Tape measure and level (4 ft recommended)
- Drill / impact driver with a #22 bit (5/32″) for pilot holes
- Crescent wrench for spring tensioning
- Socket / wrench set and appropriate anchors for your surface
- Fasteners per your mounting style — the mounting PDF lists exact sizes (e.g., #10 × 3/4″ for steel jambs, 2.5″ sheet-metal screws to secure the roll tube)
- 5/32 shim washers, chalk line, marker
- Ladder or lift rated for the opening height, plus a helper
Step 2: Installation Overview
This is the manual install sequence. Follow the fastener sizes, clearances, and spring turns in your mounting-style PDF.
- Mount the tracks and brackets — per your mounting style above. Both tracks must be plumb, level, and parallel (diametrically opposed), or the door won't roll evenly. Keep any fastener heads from protruding more than 1/8″ into the track.
- Install the 6″ brush seal / automatic reset onto the track — do this before fastening the tracks to the wall, since it can't be added once the tracks are up.
- Wrap and tension the curtain. Wrap the curtain tightly onto the roll tube. Remove the flat retaining clip, then wind the square shaft on the spring end clockwise with a crescent wrench using the turn chart below. Replace the retaining clip to lock the spring.
- Seat the roll tube. Slip the idler (notched) end into its bracket until it fully seats, unroll about 1.5 ft of curtain to hang in the track, then install the tensioned spring end and remove the retaining clip.
- Lock down and test travel. Pull the curtain down, line up the bottom grommet with the lock-down hole, and set the lock-down pin. Do this two or three times to confirm the curtain tracks evenly and the door lifts with light assistance.
- Secure the roll tube with the 2.5″ sheet-metal screws through both mounting plates. Failure to secure the roll tube can cause injury.
- Mount the header curtain with the aluminum clamp strip, Gateway logo facing the building exterior, so the curtain hangs over the roll (about 6″ above it on wall mounts).
- Final test. Remove the lock-down pin and let the curtain rise slowly until the foam pad meets the header. Confirm smooth, even travel.
Spring Tensioning & Adjustment
Use the turn chart to find the number of complete clockwise turns for your door's width and height.

If the door rises too fast (too much tension): pull the curtain down enough to line up the spring shaft, insert the spring tension clip, lift the spring end out of the bracket, unroll about two feet by hand, reseat the tube, then remove the clip and retest.
If the door won't go all the way up (not enough tension): pull the curtain down about two feet, insert the tension clip, lift the spring end out, roll the curtain back up by hand, reseat the tube, remove the clip, and retest.
Safety Notes
- Wind the spring clockwise only — a maximum of 25 complete turns. Springs wound counterclockwise or past 25 turns are not covered by Gateway without prior approval, and can detach.
- Never let go of the wrench while the spring is under tension — it can spring back and cause injury.
- Secure the roll tube with the 2.5″ screws before operating the door.
Other Roll-Up Installation Guides
This page covers manual, hand-operated doors. For powered and high-traffic roll-ups, see the matching guide:
- In-Tube Motor Roll-Up Installation — motor inside the roll tube; no spring tensioning.
- High-Cycle Automatic Roll-Up Installation — high-speed doors for high-traffic openings.
- Chain Hoist Roll-Up Installation — manual chain operation for larger, heavier doors.
Screen or Vinyl?
The install is identical — only the curtain material changes. For mesh weave, vinyl weight, airflow, and color options, see the products page.
Manual Roll-Up Installation FAQs
Do bug screen and vinyl roll-up doors install differently?
No. The hardware, tracks, spring, and mounting are identical. The only difference is the curtain — insect-screen mesh or reinforced vinyl — so a single install process covers both.
How do I know which mounting style I have?
Face-of-wall- tracks fasten to a flat wall surface; under-lintel / between-jamb tracks fasten inside the opening to the jambs; stand-off brackets attach to an existing sectional door track.
If you're unsure, send photos of your opening and we'll confirm it.
How many turns should I wind the spring?
Use the turn chart for your door's width and height — most doors fall between 8 and 14 turns. Wind clockwise only, and never exceed 25 complete turns.
Can I install a manual roll-up door myself?
Yes — manual spring-counterbalanced doors are commonly installed in-house by a maintenance team comfortable with basic tools and anchoring, with a helper for the roll tube. Follow the spring-tensioning safety notes closely.
What's the lead time and warranty?
Typical lead time is 3–4 weeks, and 3–5 weeks for one to two doors during peak summer demand. Doors carry a 1-year limited warranty covering defects in materials and workmanship from shipment.
